The Health Work Toolbox

A one-stop resource for tackling avoidable sickness absence

Jenny Lunt and Kim Burton explain how a web-based resource, the Health<->Work Toolbox, could soon play a significant part in addressing the impact of common health problems on work productivity and sickness absence

The recent Improving lives green paper on work, health and disability sets out the government’s aim to reduce the huge gap between the employment rates of disabled and non-disabled people1. It also provides a salutary reminder of the enormous costs that ill health among working-age people still pose for our society, which the report puts at around £100 billion a year, with £9 billion in direct costs to employers1. The green paper is wide reaching, addressing the challenges of helping disabled people into work, while recognising the importance of musculoskeletal and mental health problems as leading causes of disability among working age people…

Dr Jenny Lunt is a chartered and registered health psychologist and associate fellow of the British Psychological Society. She is former principal health psychologist at the Health and Safety Laboratory.
