Taking the sweat out of the GDPR

A hitchhiker’s guide to continued compliance

Summary:

OH nurse Sally-Anne Evans provides practical, experienced-based advice on the GDPR, retention and deletion of manual records and the effect of the Privacy Notice.

Ever since the term ‘GDPR’ first saw the light of day, its effect on practitioners ranged from mild disinterest at first, followed by a realisation that this may indeed have an impact on practice, to moments of panic and anxiety when the dreaded date of 25 May 2018 approached. Why did we get so anxious about this, after all, we had been doing pretty well coping with all the regulatory requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the General Medical Council – and their predecessors – had we not? The General Data Protection Regulation 2018 (GDPR) gave rise to persistent queries, typically via the UK OH Practitioners Facebook page and the Health Education Occupational Practitioners (HEOPS) group

Sally-Anne Evans is an independent occupational health nurse and Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health. She currently works in the independent education sector and the packaging industry.
