Sight loss and employment: Part 2

Part 2: the role of occupational health

Summary:

In the second of a two-part article on sight loss and employment, RNIB employment adviser Heather Barbara discusses the practical steps OH professionals can take to help prevent unnecessary job loss and unemployment for blind and partially sighted people. It includes an introduction to RNIB resources available to OH professionals that will enhance the recommendations and support they provide to employers.

It need not be hard to keep people with sight loss in work. With advances in assistive technology and financial support from the government’s Access to Work scheme, keeping an employee with sight loss in their job can be easier and more cost effective than you might think.

Many people leave their job when their sight begins to deteriorate, and this has an obvious impact on their quality of life. At the same time, employers can lose the skills and knowledge of valuable team members…

Heather Barbara is employment adviser for the RNIB in Scotland.
