Summary:

The eyesight requirements for UK drivers, especially for those in Group 2, and the myriad conditions that may or may not preclude driving can be tricky to navigate as part of the wider health assessment of drivers. In this article, specialist ophthalmic colleagues from King’s College London and the King’s College Hospital provide an invaluable guide for OH practitioners.

Driving gained increasing societal and cultural importance from the early 20th century as the commercial availability of motor vehicles increased. In the UK, the proportion of the population who consider car ownership a ‘necessity’ doubled from 22% in 1983 to 44% in 2012, second only to electronic appliances and internet access. The number of vehicles on British roads has similarly increased, from 3 million in 1946 to 38.2 million in 2018, equating to roughly one car for every two people.
