The At Work Partnership provides the following hand-arm vibration syndrome training:

  • Certificate in Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) – 2 day course
  • HAVS refresher courses – standard and advanced level
  • HAVS introductory course – Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome for Occupational Health Technicians & Nurses

Course tutor: Dr Roger Cooke, consultant in occupational medicine, and a leading expert in hand-arm vibration syndrome

Certificate in HAVS

This training for OH professionals examines the requirements for health surveillance for a workforce exposed to hand-transmitted vibration, and the diagnosis and management of an individual with HAVS. It will provide an in-depth understanding of HAVS, and of the OH role in managing issues related to hand transmitted vibration in the workplace.

Who should attend?
This training is designed for OH nurses and doctors. Previous experience of HAVS is not essential, but experience in OH is required. Only those delegates who meet the HSE requirements (doctors or nurses holding the appropriate UK registration) can take the exam at the end of the course, although others may attend.

Examination and certification
Attendance at all sessions is a pre-requisite to sitting the exam, set by the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM). Those who pass the exam receive a Certificate of Competence accredited by the FOM.

The exam is mainly multiple choice (one 30 min paper for nurses; and two papers of 30 min each for doctors).

HAVS Refresher courses

Our online HAVS refresher courses provide an in-depth update on the requirements for health surveillance for a workforce exposed to hand-transmitted vibration, and in the diagnosis and management of an individual with HAVS. We provide training at two levels – standard and advanced.

Both courses are delivered online as a one-day workshop.

Who is the training designed for?

Both days are designed for OH professionals who have attended the Faculty of Occupational Medicine approved two-day HAVS training course. In order to undertake statutory tier 3 or tier 4 HAVS assessments, all OH professionals need to have an OH qualification, so this is a prerequisite.

The training is tailored as follows:

  • The standard refresher course is for OH advisers and physicians who infrequently undertake HAVS surveillance
  • The advanced refresher course is for OH advisers and physicians who are regularly undertaking HAVS health surveillance.

Introduction to Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) for OH technicians and nurses

A one-day Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) training course designed specifically for OH technicians, and screening nurses to provide background knowledge to assist in their role undertaking delegated tasks for statutory health surveillance. It provides a solid introduction to HAVS for OH nurses planning to progress to the FOM Certificate in HAVS course.
