Part 1: the WHO has classified burnout as an ‘occupational phenomenon’. But what is it, and why is it important?

Summary:

The WHO has classified burnout as a distinct occupational phenomenon in the latest edition of its International Classification of Diseases – ICD-11. In this first article in a two-part feature, John Ballard explores the relationship between burnout and work, and examines the research evidence on its prevalence and considers its implications for individuals and organisations. The second part will consider causality and interventions.

Burnout is to be classified as a distinct occupational syndrome – though not as a medical condition – in the 11th revision of the World Health Organization (WHO) International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11)1,2. This recognition is indication that occupational burnout is being taken seriously.
