Adjusting OH

Summary:

A survey of nearly 1,500 employees with disabilities makes depressing reading for OH practitioners and their professional bodies.

Findings from two Business Disability Forum (BDF) surveys of 1,480 employees with disabilities and 396 managers make painful reading for OH practitioners, services and professional bodies1 (this issue p.41). Following an OH referral, less than half of employees described the OH report as easy to understand, less than one-third said the process had helped put adjustments in place and less than one-quarter said OH had helped them understand or manage the impact of their disability at work. Just one-quarter of the managers agreed ‘a lot’ that the OH process helped them understand how to manage and support their employees, or that the OH process was helpful. OH reports were criticised by managers for simply repeating what the employee had told the practitioner, being unbalanced, being unclear or non-committal…
