Facilitating adjustments Introducing the JDAPT:
a tool to help workers with chronic conditions access support
Summary:
The Job Demands and Accommodation Planning Tool (JDAPT) is a personalised, interactive tool that helps workers think about, and access, the accommodations they need. Monique Gignac and Uyen Vu of the Canadian Institute for Work & Health explain its aims and the research underpinning its development.
Health conditions, combined with job demands, work environments and organisational policies and practices can create obstacles to working for people with disabilities. A further challenge for many individuals is how to manage periods of disability at work without doing lasting damage to their work performance, their reputation at work, their relationships with colleagues and their own health.
Workers with physical and mental health-related difficulties need a way to receive support from their managers and employers to get through disability episodes, without having to disclose their personal health information. This article discusses a tool, developed at the Institute for Work & Health (IWH) in Toronto, Canada, to help workers deal with these episodic disabilities…
Dr Monique Gignac is senior scientist and scientific director at the Institute for Work & Health (IWH).
Uyen Vu is the communications manager at the IWH. The IWH is a Toronto-based not-for-profit organisation that conducts research to support policy-makers, employers and workers in creating healthy, safe and inclusive work environments.
