Summary:
The UK government says it is committed to expanding the OH workforce. But that also entails promoting OH as an attractive career option.
Research commissioned on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care suggests that to reverse the ‘dwindling’ size of the OH workforce it will be necessary to tackle poor awareness and perceptions of OH as a career choice for nurses and doctors1 (pp.40–42). The research found that any prior awareness of OH as a career option stems largely from practitioners having had contact with OH, either as patients (eg for vaccinations and health clearance) or professionally, rather than through medical/nursing education or having had clinical placement opportunities while in training.
