Survey: OH pay and benefits 2018, part 3

Part 3: the state of OH – a qualitative review

Summary:

In the final report of Occupational Health [at Work]’s exclusive pay and benefits survey, Alice Sinclair and John Ballard examine the state of the professions and how
opportunities and ways of working in OH have changed over time.

Occupational health (OH) is either a greatly undervalued or highly appreciated discipline –  depending who you talk to. When practitioners describe the state of their profession they are more likely than not to portray it in a negative way. There remains an acute shortage of OH professionals to meet demand, compounded by a scarcity of appropriate training courses and an ageing OH workforce. Job satisfaction is being threatened by a trend towards outsourced contracts and a rise in remote rather than face-to-face consultations. And yet, despite concerns about the future of OH, many OH and occupational hygiene professionals report varied and rewarding careers….

Alice Sinclair is a freelance social policy researcher with considerable experience in research on occupational health.

John Ballard is editor of Occupational Health [at Work].
