The BMA’s occupational medicine committee has released updated guidance on the role of medical professionals in addressing alcohol and drug misuse in the workplace.

It says the workplace is an ideal place to offer health education on alcohol and drugs and provides opportunities to identify and support problem users.

The 2016 guide includes a new chapter (Chapter 9) on recruitment of those who are or have been in treatment for a drug or alcohol problem. It comments that health professionals can be very influential in addressing employers’ concerns about risks and challenging stigma and negative stereotypes.

The guide is at Alcohol, drugs and the workplace – the role of medical professionals (pdf) or linked off this BMA webpage.
